Lego Carbon Racers: Maroon Mammoth

We're back on the regular posting schedule, and what better way return than with the Maroon Mammoth, a Lego Carbon Racer that simultaneously is and isn't based on a preexisting Lego Tiny Turbos model.

This is one of those models that's been through a couple of iterations. More on that later.

For me, I love the futuristic look of this truck, from its long taillight to the cylindrical cab. I don't know how it's a practical truck with that giant engine filling up the bed, but . . . whatever. Must be a rally thing.

In rotation, that cab-cylinder kinda looks like a sphere.

I based the Maroon Mammoth mostly on this Tiny Turbo, Lego set 8130, Terrain Crusher. Of course, trucks like this have also appeared in sets like 8126, Desert Challenge--and I've owned both the Terrain Crusher and Desert Challenge sets, so I had a pretty good basis to sort-of-recreate this trucks.

I think the original models had a big 6x2 brick in the middle, but we're not doing that here. Keep reading to see why.

See? Here's why: We needed those bricks in the middle there. Now, scandalously enough, I don't think I have those bricks in that color, so I used navy-colored ones. Good thing they're not visible.

See Step 5? Does anyone have a 1x4 transparent red plate they can use instead of two 1x2 ones? I feel like that piece exists--most likely as a byproduct of 1990s sets.

A previous iteration of this model had a 2x4 sloped piece for a windshield--like the one on the original Terrain Crusher--instead of a 2x2 one (see Step 8). It didn't look bad, but it resulted in a wider model overall, and the whole thing just seemed . . . chunky. Does that sound interesting? If so, let me know. I made blueprints and everything for that version, so if you want it, I can post it.

Here's another scandal: See those all those maroon pieces in Step 9? In my model, they're all light grey. I could've sworn I had two maroon discs of my own, but no matter how much I searched, I could only find one. I therefore used two grey discs and made the grille piece match.

Rugged wheels added, and that's it!

There it is, the Maroon Mammoth! This was a fun one to put together with that weird cabin, and I think it came together rather well. Tune in next time for . . . for . . . yes! it's going to be my favorite Carbon Racer, the one that started it all! See you then!
